Coach Micaela Medina has been a high school girls basketball head coach for the past seven years. From 2016-2018, she started her head coaching career at Cobre High School, in Bayard New Mexico. There, she helped lead the team to their first bid in the state tournament in over a decade, leaving with a winning record of 30-25.

Medina then spent the next 5 years, 2018-2023, as the girls head basketball coach at Valencia High School. After a re-build of the program, in the 2021/2022 season the team finished 18-12 over all, district runner ups, and made it to the quarterfinals in the State Tournament. In the 2022/2023 season, the team finished 19-11 over all, placed third in district, and once again made it to the quarterfinals in the state tournament.

Prior to Medina’s head coaching career, from 2012-2014, she was a student assistant coach at Western New Mexico University under Coach Rusty Kennedy.

She spent one season playing for the Lady Mustangs during the 2009-10 season where she played in 15 games, as prior to that she had a solid high school career.

School record 5 straight District 1-4A Players of the Year from Gallup High, 

5x in a row District 1-4A Coach of the Year, 5x in a row District 1-4A Champions, 5 straight NMAA state tournament qualifier (Final Four appearance 2018, 2021).
